Frequently Asked Questions
Getting started
- How does Uthana generate character animation using AI?
Uthana’s team of expert machine learning and animation engineers builds AI models trained on large-scale motion capture datasets. These models learn how humans move and can be conditioned on text, 2D video, voice, or game state. These models produce realistic animations ready for integration into any 3D pipeline.
- What is Uthana?
Uthana builds foundation models for human motion. Our suite of AI tools, leveraging these foundation models, generates animation data from a variety of inputs: text, video, animation, and gamepad/keyboard locomotion. - How do I get started with Uthana?
- Create your free account http://uthana.com/user/signup
- Upload a character (rigged or unrigged) or use one of Uthana’s stock characters.
- Choose a feature:
- Describe an action with a prompt (text-to-motion),
- Upload a 2D reference clip (video-to-motion),
- Stitch and blend two motions together, or
- Control character locomotion in real-time and record the record the output.
- Preview your motions in the Uthana viewer, and refine or trim to a specific length if you want.
- Export the motion as a GLB or FBX file.
No plugins or installations are required. Everything runs directly in-browser!
- Do I need a rigged character to use Uthana?
No. You can upload either a rigged character or a static mesh, and Uthana’s auto-rigging system will create a functional skeleton automatically. If your character is already rigged, Uthana will detect and match the bone structure instantly using proprietary retargeting technology. - Can I generate motion without uploading my own character model?
Yes! Every Uthana account includes access to stock characters (Tar and Ava), as well as industry-standard rigs like Unreal Engine’s Manny and Quinn. These are perfect for testing and prototyping motions before applying them to your own models. - How do I upload and rig a character?
- Make sure your character is in .glb or .fbx format, in T-pose or A-pose, and has feet planted to the ground.
- Sign in to the Uthana web app at http://uthana.com/app.
- Click the Upload Character button in the Character panel (at the top-right corner of the screen).
- Select your character file and Uthana will automatically detect its rig information. If no rig exists, Uthana’s auto-rigging AI will generate one within seconds.
- Then preview your character with any existing motion, or generate a new one.
- What types of characters or skeletons are supported?
Uthana supports any bipedal humanoid skeleton or mesh, from Mixamo rigs to custom humanoid rigs with standard bone naming conventions. Non-human or highly stylized rigs can also be supported with minimal adjustments, as long as they follow a humanoid joint hierarchy. - What can I do if my skeleton doesn't look correct when previewing a motion?
Email us at support@uthana.com or connect with us on Discord. - How can I preview animation output?
All Uthana tools can be used with our 3D web viewer. After generating or recording motion, you can:- Preview the animation directly in your browser.
- Select motions you like and add them to your library.
- Trim or loop segments in your library before exporting the animation.
- What formats does Uthana export to?
Uthana exports motions as GLB or FBX files. BVH can also be handled upon request. - How do I download or integrate a generated motion into my project?
When viewing any motion, click the .glb or .fbx button to download the animation file. Import the file into your preferred tool or engine as you normally would. - Can I integrate Uthana’s models directly in my application, tool, or platform?
Yes! Uthana offers an API for developers who want to integrate generated motions directly into their own tools or games. You can use the API to do everything the web app supports, including: - Can I integrate Uthana’s models directly in my application, tool, or platform?

Use cases & applications
- Who is Uthana for?
Uthana is for anyone looking to get their characters moving quickly: indie devs, studios, animators, game designers, and more! Whether you’re building a game, producing a cinematic, or experimenting with AI-driven virtual humans, Uthana gives you the tools to create motion instantly. Our users range from solo creators prototyping gameplay animations to large studios integrating Uthana’s AI models into full production pipelines. - Is Uthana best for games, cinematics, or VR/AR projects?
All of the above! Uthana’s tools are engine-agnostic, meaning they work seamlessly across various use cases. Whether you’re animating an NPC in Unreal, building a virtual influencer in Unity, or creating walk cycles in Maya, Uthana fits into your workflow. - How can Uthana speed up my animation pipeline?
Uthana replaces hours of manual keyframing or motion capture cleanup with AI-generated motion that’s ready in seconds. Instead of recording, processing, and retargeting mocap data, you can:- Upload your character,
- Describe or control a desired movement, and
- Generate and download production-ready motion.
- How does Uthana compare to motion capture or keyframe animation?
Uthana offers the speed of procedural generation with the realism of motion capture — without the need for specialized hardware or large animation teams. For example:- Motion capture:
- Pros: Extremely realistic, captures unique performance nuance.
- Cons: Requires studio setup, actors (requiring hours or days of lead time to coordinate), then days or weeks of cleanup and retargeting.
- Keyframe animation:
- Pros: Full artistic control.
- Cons: Time-intensive, manual, hard to iterate, and can be difficult to replicate realistic human motion.
- Uthana AI motion:
- Pros: Instant generation, real-time control, physically consistent, works with any character model.
- Cons: Limited to human-realistic motion, and requires you to describe motion with text or reference clips.
- Motion capture:
- How do studios integrate Uthana into existing production pipelines?
Uthana is built to meet you where you need it in your pipeline by plugging directly into standard animation and game development workflows. Import Uthana’s motion via .glb or .fbx exports, or use the API to get motion data directly in your DCC of choice. Looking for direct integration in your workflow?
